Role Models

Everyone has people that they look up to as role models and are inspired by, but having to choose one, that's the hard part. For me, I would have to say one of the people I look up to the most would be Nelson Mandela.

From young, Nelson Mandela was faced with many challenges and difficulties. The biggest of which was the apartheid in South Africa, and being black, Nelson Mandela was highly discriminated against. Because of this, he had the ambition to change his country for himself, and the rest of the community in South Africa that were discriminated against. That was his goal, and he spent his whole life trying to fulfil it. He went to jail for it, was threatened by his family and faced fierce opposition, but in the end he triumphed.

This result was only possible for Nelson Mandela because he exhibited certain skills of leadership and perseverance. These values include being concerned and committed to his cause, as he never gave up and stood strong even in times of difficult and being self-aware, as he always was aware of what was going on around him, so as to react accordingly. He was also resilient, as he was ready to accept challenges and continued standing on his two feet no matter what.

To go into more detail, I feel that the skill that Nelson Mandela shows most is the fact that he was principled, as he was able to follow and live by his values and the values I mentioned above throughout his whole career. This is important because if you can't manage this, it would be very hard to succeed, and there will be many more challenges along the path to achieving your goal!

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. "
- Nelson Mandela
